Today, Marketsformarkets released a report which indicated that the 3D printing market will more than double within the next 5 years. Currently, worth $2 billion a year, the market is set to rise to an enormous $5.3billion by 2025.

Of course, we are a long way off from seeing 3D printing become the norm. The largest factor against the industry, according to technologymagazine.com is the cost of the machines and the expenses of the materials needed to use it. High lead time is another restriction as the end result can take a long time to produce. These factors will restrain popularity, however despite this - the market is expected to grow exponentially.

The most promising areas for growth are education and healthcare. 3D printers are being used in the educational sector to help students learn and study objects which they otherwise wouldn't be able to get up close and personal with. For instance, 3D maps can be printed so that Geography students can study landscape in more detail, and realistic models of organs can be printed so that biology students can study them closely and more hygienically - rather than having to wait to receive a donation.

The biggest area of growth will undoubtedly be healthcare. 3D printers are already being used in orthopaedics and dental, prosthetics and implant sectors, too. PPE company, Mensura Mask, are currently searching for investors to help them bring their idea of 3D printed masks to a wider audience.

The minds behind the idea for 3D printed masks are the students and professors of The Imperial College - London. Their data shows that 97% of healthcare workers have reported facial injuries from existing facial masks due to them not fitting well enough, and having to constantly adjust them.

The Mensura Mask service offers the opportunity to create a bespoke mask for the individual. Step one, taking a photo of your face from every angle using one of the recommended and compatible applications for this service. Then, the company will send a file to you which you can download on to a USB stick and have printed. Of course, not everyone has a 3D printer - and that is one of the reasons that this campaign targets healthcare workers rather than the general public.
